KitKat Reviews Cold Skies by Thomas King (a DreadfulWater Mystery)

Hi everyone, it’s KitKat. I just finished reading Cold Skies by Thomas King, and I wanted to share my thoughts while they’re still fresh.

This is the third book in the DreadfulWater mystery series. I haven’t read the first two yet, but I didn’t feel lost—King gives just enough context that you can jump in here if you want. It’s a mystery set in a small town, with a retired cop-turned-photographer who ends up pulled into a murder investigation. It’s also funny. Not laugh-out-loud all the time, but there’s a dry, low-key sense of humor throughout that really worked for me.

That said, it took me a while to get into it. I’m a slow reader, and the writing style—especially the dialogue—felt like it would click better for someone who reads a bit faster. I kept thinking it might work really well as a dramatic reading or maybe an audiobook (I’m not sure if there is one). The pacing of the jokes and conversations might land better when heard.

Early on, I also found some of the side details distracting. There are a lot of little asides—extra bits about characters or the town—that sometimes pulled me off track. I think a faster reader could probably absorb those without losing the thread, but I ended up needing to refocus a few times.

Still, the deeper I got into the book, the more I enjoyed it. The story pulls you in gradually, and by the second half, I didn’t want to put it down. My special someone actually kept stealing the book from me, finished it in three days, and loved it. Honestly, that helped me stay motivated.

I’m really glad I stuck with it. Once I settled into the rhythm, I appreciated how well King balances mystery with character and tone. The mystery is satisfying, the humor is smart, and the world of Chinook feels real. There are themes, too—about technology, land, and the people caught in between—but King keeps the tone light, never preachy. It's more sardonic tail-flick than hiss. I’d definitely consider reading more in the series.

Butterball Reviews #MurderSheWrote: Hook, Line, and Murder #JessicaFletcher #CabotCove #Mystery

Meow, fellow book lovers!

It is I, your favorite feline connoisseur, Butterball, here with an exclusive review of "Murder, She Wrote: Hook, Line, and Murder.

Now, let me tell you, I was thrilled when I pawed my way into this book, for it whisked me right into the captivating world of "Murder, She Wrote," long after its television glory days.

But, as my keen senses detected, there were some whiskers out of place.

First, let's give credit where credit is due! Authors Donald Bain, Renée Paley-Bain, and of course, the astute Jessica Fletcher herself, have done a serviceable job in crafting a tale that transports us to Cabot Cove's murky mysteries once more.

In this novel, Mrs. Fletcher enters a fishing competition. Sheriff Metzger's wife, Maureen, tags along and is promptly kidnapped. One might call this book a thriller or suspense rather than a cozy mystery, so perhaps it might have been more up Zorro's alley than my own.

I must admit, my whiskers weren't fully quivering with delight as I delved into this particular novel. The writing style was rather bland, for my discerning taste. The prose lacked the purr-sonality that would have made it a real page-turner. The story, despite its thrilling premise, was more like a gentle grooming session than a heart-stopping chase.

Now, don't get me wrong; the characters were as charming as ever. Jessica Fletcher, with her keen intellect, continues to be the reigning queen of amateur sleuths. The supporting characters were a delightful bunch too, but their interactions seemed meek and mundane, like a lowly scratch on the furniture.

Despite my disappointment, the nostalgia factor whisked me back to a time when mysteries were solved with a twinkle in the eye. I appreciated that this book allowed me to reunite with cherished memories of Jessica Fletcher's brilliant deductions. My tail twitched with contentment at the familiar setting of Cabot Cove and the aroma of intrigue that always filled the air.

In conclusion, "Murder, She Wrote: Hook, Line, and Murder" was a delightful opportunity to saunter back into the world of the legendary Jessica Fletcher. While the book may not have clawed its way to the top of my recommended reads list, it's still a worthwhile jaunt for anyone seeking a comforting visit to yesteryears. So, cozy up with a cup of milk and a purring friend, and dive into the mysteries of Cabot Cove once more.

Butterball Reviews #British #Thriller Make Death Love Me by Ruth Rendell

Title: Make Death Love Me
Author: Ruth Rendell
Genre: British / Thriller
Status: Read
Presence of Cats: None

Butterball Says:

On how many occasions have I lamented living so much of my life without ever having read a Ruth Rendell mystery? I suppose one might say I'm making up for lost time by reading every one that crosses the Mystery Cats' desk.

Today I inform you of my latest read, a book perhaps more in the style of a thriller than a classic murder mystery. I say "thriller" only because we, the reader, watch the crime play out in its entirety. We are aware of the culprit, we are aware of the crime... or, at least, we think we are... until the grand finale, when everything changes.

Make Death Love Me boasts a copyright date of 1979--a mere 40 years ago, and yet we are immediately aware of all the changes that have taken place between that time and this.

Alan Groombridge works in a small bank in a small town. Every day, he removes 3,000 pounds from the safe and fantasizes about stealing it. He could easily live on that money for a year, he figures--a clue that we are gazing into the past, for what feline could live on 3,000 pounds these days?

When the bank is robbed, Groombridge sees this as his opportunity to escape with his coveted 3,000 pounds. Meanwhile, the bank robbers flee with cash and Alan's young coworker, Joyce.

We spend the majority of the book watching the situation go from bad to worse for our bank robbers and their hostage.  At the same time, Alan Groombridge reinvents himself in London, commits a slight bit of identity theft, and lives out his fantasy.

Hark! Has nobody died?  Isn't this book entitled Make Death Love Me? Indeed it is. Why so, if it is not a murder mystery? Where is this death we've been promised?

Ahh, now, that would be telling! I shan't give away the ending by revealing who dies, or how.  You will simply have to read Make Death Love Me for yourself to enjoy the intriguing narrative leading to death.

Ginger Reviews The #Cat Who Went Bananas #Cozy #Mystery

Title: The Cat Who Went Bananas

Author: Lilian Jackson Braun
Genre: Cozy / Pets / Amateur Sleuth
Status: Abandoned
Cats?: At least three

Ginger Says:

I'm breaking my own rules, here.

I have a bit of a personal policy about not reviewing books until I've read them to completion. If I have no intention of finishing a book, I wouldn't normally review it.

Why have I broken my rule for The Cat Who Went Bananas?

Because it's bad.  It's really bad, really poorly written. Dick and Jane Solve a Murder, with a heavy helping of Grampa Simpson rambling. When you're constantly asking a book "Why are you telling me this?" that's not a good sign. Honestly, it was a struggle to get through the first three chapters. By that point, I knew I wouldn't be reading the rest of the book.

Sure cats have nine lives, but they're all too short to waste on bad writing.

The reason I wanted to review The Cat Who Went Bananas (or at least comment on it) anyway is that this book comes from a series that's been around for decades. The earlier "The Cat Who..." books are fantastic. I've reviewed one written in 1967 very positively.

When I got my paws on a copy of The Cat Who Went Bananas, I put it aside for a time when I wanted to treat myself. Sometimes you need to cozy up with a good book, and if you're lucky, you're familiar with a series that can give you just the feeling of warmth and comfort you need.

The fact that this terrible book is part of a series that was formerly fantastic is what disappoints me the most. I had high expectations based on other books in the series.  This book doesn't meet those expectations. Nowhere near.

How the mighty have fallen.

Ever since I put this book down, I've been thinking about successful series on a grander scale. Not just books, but television too.  No matter how good a series is in the beginning (or wherever its golden era is situated), at some point that series is going to be in decline. I really respect creators who know when to pull the plug, but I also understand the urge to keep on truckin, especially if the series is making big money.

As a reader, do you prefer to follow a series into the abyss because you're comfortable and familiar with the characters? Or do you stop buying those books as soon as they're past their prime? I can think of a lot of TV shows I've stopped watching even though I really liked them earlier on.

What about you? Can you think of a series (whether it be books or television) that dropped off in quality? Did you keep reading or watching?  Or did you dump it like yesterday's trash? Let us know in the comments.

If you're curious about The Cat Who Went Bananas, I invite you to form your own opinions. I won't be finishing it, but maybe you will. Maybe you'll love it!

Hey Mystery Cats, What is the Ultimate British Mystery Series?

We're talking television today.

The Brits make the best TV mysteries, but which series is the best of the best?

Butterball Says:

There is only one possible response to such a question. The greatest British mystery series of all time is Midsomer Murders. This program has been around for decades. Why are we still watching it after more than 20 years? Because this long-running television show is consistent and reliable in providing us with the cosy settings and situations we crave.

That's why the Ultimate British Mystery Series is Midsomer Murders.

Zorro Says:

Looking for a good time? Well then Death in Paradise is the show for you. Set on the fictitious island of Saint Marie and filmed on location in Guadeloupe, Death in Paradise is funny, sunny, and comfortingly formulaic. One of the best things about all these British shows is the predictable pacing, and Death in Paradise has got that down to an art form. You always know roughly when things are going to happen, but I'm always surprised by the results. This show's got a lot going for it--including comedy legends like Ardal O'Hanlon!

That's why the Ultimate British Mystery Series is Death in Paradise!

KitKat Says:

Believe it or not, I agree with Butterball (it happens on rare occasions), but I'll pick another one--which is easy to do, because there are so many amazing British mysteries out there. I'm going with Inspector Lewis, the Morse spin-off. Why Lewis and not Morse? Because Inspector Lewis has everything going for it that I enjoyed with Morse--it's cinematic, it's got an amazing soundtrack and intriguing mysteries--but it doesn't have the one thing I was never too fond of with Morse: Morse himself. I just never liked that character, sue me! With Inspector Lewis, I really enjoy the interplay between the investigators and, on top of that, the show is visually stunning.

That's why the Ultimate British Mystery Series is Inspector Lewis.

Ginger Says:

Oh, it's so hard to choose, but I'll have to go with Rosemary and Thyme. If you've never seen it, you should go out and find yourself a copy. It's a murder mystery series about two gardeners who just happen to solve crimes. One used to be in the police and one has an academic background, so they're perfectly positioned to figure out whodunit. This is the cosy of cosies. It's the cosiest cosy that ever cosied. The characters are great and there's plenty of gardening? Who could ask for anything more.

Butterball Reviews #British #Mystery A Guilty Thing Surprised by Ruth Rendell

Title: A Guilty Thing Surprised (An Inspector Wexford Mystery)
Author: Ruth Rendell
Genre: British Detectives
Status: Read
Presence of Cats: A brief appearance by a ginger named Ginger (very creative...)

Butterball Says:

As I recall, it was a mere one year ago when I lamented the fact that I had gone so very long in life without ever having read the words of one of Britain's finest mistresses of mystery.  Ruth Rendell represents quality writing and intriguing plots, the likes of which this cat has not seen since Agatha Christie.

A Guilty Thing Surprised is not the first Inspector Wexford Mystery, and though I have not read any other books in this series, I did not feel this fact hampered my enjoyment in the least.

Because the setting is a manor house in England's green and pleasant land, one is immediately transported to the time of Agatha Christie's writings.  Thus, it feels oddly anachronistic when the servants are reportedly listening to The Beatles and stacking the dishwasher.

The copyright date on this book reads 1970, which leads one to believe it is set in perhaps the late sixties: a time of change, when the older generation believes they have betters, and the younger generation believes they can one day become their betters. And perhaps they are correct.

When the lady of the house is murdered in the woods, suspicion falls upon the usual suspects: the husband, the family, the servants. Motives abound.  Whether she was murdered for love or money, there is no short supply of characters who might have wielded the weapon.

There are hints of piquancy and salacious goings-on behind the scenes, but I must say the resolution is salacious in the extreme! From the very first pages, I thought things were perhaps heading in a direction KitKat would most enjoy. Was I correct in this assumption? Ah, that would be telling!

For now, I'll only say that I thoroughly enjoyed my experience in the world of Inspector Wexford, and I hope to visit again very soon. Highly recommended for lovers of Agatha Christie's masterful works!

KitKat Reviews The Courtyard Clairvoyant Mysteries #Ace #LGBTQIA #Paranormal #Cozy #Mystery #Series

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073ZM1HG5?tag=dorishay-20
Title: The Courtyard Clairvoyant Mysteries Collection One
Author: J.J. Brass
Genre: LGBT / Psychic / Cozy
Status: Read
Cats?: Yes, but I don't want to talk about it.

KitKat Says:

I have a new favourite queer cozy mystery series and it's called The Courtyard Clairvoyant Mysteries.

What's so great about the Courtyard Clairvoyant? Well, first of all we've got an asexual aunt and her pansexual niece as main characters. Aunt Elise is currently recovering from a cornea transplant and guess what?  Turns out the cornea she received previously belonged to a psychic!  Now when she looks people in the eye, she can see what they're hiding.

What are you going to do when you find out you're suddenly psychic? You're going to solve mysteries, of course! Especially if you live on a small-town courtyard and your neighbours are all a bunch of gossipy (but mostly friendly) people.

My favourite of the four books I've read was the third in the series: I Spy a Courtyard Casanova.

In this book, Aunt Elise's former fiance arrives on the courtyard. It turns out she left him at the altar many years ago, and seeing him again brings out lots of messy feelings.

I love the way author J.J. Brass shows us this older woman coming to a greater understanding of what it means to be asexual, for her.  It's not like she's been identifying as ace for 50 years.  The idea of identifying as asexual and that there are other people in the world who are a lot like her is pretty new.

I also love the way her niece Val helps along the way. Life can be confusing for anybody, but for someone who is questioning her identity later in life, Elise sometimes feels really discombobulated. She admires the way her niece's generation can be so out and proud while she still feels a need to keep certain matters private.

The other thing I love most about I Spy a Courtyard Casanova is the mystery itself. It starts out looking like a simple theft, but we soon discover an art fraud ring going on right under their noses. Who doesn't love a good art forgery story, am I right?

There are cats in this series but I won't say too much about that. When you get to the fourth book in the series, I Spy a Wedding Dress Mess, you'll find out why.

I highly recommend The Courtyard Clairvoyant for any cozy mystery reader who wants a strong cast of queer characters. This series has got it all kinds of representation covered: characters who are genderqueer, ace, poly-pan, trans, lesbian, gay, bisexual, the list goes on! There are even a few straight people in there too. 😛

If you want to sink your teeth into a cozy small-town mystery series with a hearty dose of queer representation, look no further. The Courtyard Clairvoyant Mysteries by J.J. Brass is the series for you!

Title: Magical Bookshop Mysteries: A New Paranormal Cozy Mystery Series

Author: Samantha Silver
Genre: Cozy / Paranormal / Small Town
Status:TBR
Cats?: Yes

Ginger Says:

Mystery author Samantha Silver is best known for paranormal cozies, and she's back at it with her new venture: the Magical Bookshop Mystery series!

If you've got a taste for witchcraft, small-town life and books, you might want to give this new series a try. There are already three installments available:

1) Alice In Murderland
2) Murder on the Oregon Express
3) The Very Killer Caterpillar (pre-order, available July 30, 2017)

Here's a bit more information about the first in the series, Alice In Murderland:
Moving from Miami to small-town Oregon was supposed to be boring...

When Alice Calliope takes over her recently deceased aunt's bookshop in Sapphire Village, Oregon, she's not expecting her world to be flipped upside down, but that's exactly what happens when her cousin Cat reveals to Alice that she's actually a witch. Add in the fact that the two of them stumble upon a dead body, and Alice's first day in town ends up being a lot more eventful than she could have possibly imagined!

What was supposed to be a simple cross-country move winds up with Alice having to learn how to navigate a whole new magical world while at the same time trying to clear Cat's name as she emerges as the main suspect in the murder. Add in the eccentric Grandma Cee, witchcraft lessons, a whiny old ghost and the laziest cat ever, and Alice definitely has her hands full.

With pressure mounting for the super-hot local sheriff to arrest her cousin, will Alice be able to hunt down the real killer before it's too late?

Alice in Murderland is a full-length novel and the first book in the Magical Bookshop Mystery series of paranormal cozy mysteries.

Ginger Reads The Quiche of Death, Agatha Raisin #Cozy #British #Mystery

https://www.amazon.com/Quiche-Death-Agatha-Mystery-Mysteries-ebook/dp/B001P7RV54?tag=dorishay-20
Title: The Quiche of Death, The First Agatha Raisin Mystery

Author: M.C. Beaton
Genre: Cozy / British / Small Town
Status:In Progress
Cats?:Not Yet

Ginger Says:

I only just started reading The Quiche of Death the other day, but already I understand why my fellow cozy-enthusiasts have been encouraging me to pounce on this series: within the first couple chapters, it's already got everything you could ask for in a cozy. Oh, except nobody's been murdered yet. Obviously that isn't an obstacle to my enjoyment.

What I'm really loving about The Quiche of Death is the way our main character, Agatha Raisin, is a fish out of water in her new surroundings. In the first chapter, she sells her business in London and moves to a quaint town in the Cotswolds. Moving to a small English town is a fantasy for most cozy readers, even a Canadian kitten like me. I think that's half the reason we read cozies: for the setting.

Agatha Raisin is a fish out of water not only because she's a Londoner in a tiny town, but she's a contemporary person amidst a swell of characters who seem plucked from Father Brown. The townsfolk act, dress, and even style their hair like people from the past. Sure we're getting glimpses of Penelope Keith's Hidden Villages in this town, but there's a distinct period drama aspect to the supporting cast. It's a world the reader wants to inhabit all day long. The ins and outs of village life are so attractive to a city cat like me. And a rigged Quiche Competition? Yes, please!

I would love to tell you more, but that's all I know so far. As I say, I haven't even made it to the murder yet. But unless this book takes a wild turn, I'm sure to enjoy it tremendously!
